The aim of this project is to conduct rigorous research on the death penalty in Africa. Although several countries in Africa retain the death penalty, there is virtually no rigorous research on this form of punishment. Consequently, debate on the death penalty remain largely theoretical, with much of the focus on constitutional principles and human rights arguments. The absence of rigorous and methodologically sound research has sometimes frustrated meaningful dialogue and policy on this subject.
